10 Hotspots in Government Contracting

I recently came across a white paper by Onvia, a company that delivers data, business intelligence, analytics and tools to government organizations, about the Top 10 Hotspots in Government Contracting for 2016. State, local and education (SLED) contracting is an enormous market. Some quick highlights pointed out:

·         $1.5 Trillion market

·         450,000+ Bids & RFPs issued per year

·         458 industry categories

Again, it’s an enormous market that should not be ignored. There were a couple of hotspots that really stuck out to me, though. Through the next few blog posts, I’ll highlight a few of these hotspots. So let’s jump right in.

The #8 Hotspot according to this white paper is Modernizing Government IT. “IT projects for SLED agencies address a number of important needs – from protecting data security to increasing public access to data, to ensuring a stable and cost-effective network.”

In my opinion, this should be #1! Let’s assume your contemplating moving your capital construction project management to a cloud-based PMIS to achieve increased public access to data and ensuring a stable and cost-effective network. It’s important to keep in mind that government facility owners who are managing sensitive infrastructure projects require additional levels of security controls and compliance not offered by public clouds. You’ll need high levels of security and a construction program management solution that’s available on Amazon’s GovCloud. By tying together governance-focused, audit-friendly services features with applicable compliance or audit standards through Amazon Web Service (AWS), your organization will realize many benefits including compliance with Federal Risk and Authorization Management (FedRAMP) U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Evaluating Workforce Effectiveness is named the #7 hotspot in government contracting. “In an environment of tight budgets with a push towards efficiency, SLED agencies are highly motivated to evaluate program and workflows, track progress, and figure cost-saving solutions that can enhance productivity.”

How is this all done? By stacking your team with the right people. You’ll need to attract the top talent and this is done through optimizing your organization. Whether you’re an owner, a contracting firm or a program manager, having the right team in place ensures efficiency. Construction companies today are tasked with delivering best-in-class project performance, through leadership, innovation, and organizational cultural development and growth.
